TwoPhDstudentshippositionsareopenforthefallsemesterinthelabofDr.ZhiyongCheng,DepartmentofFoodScienceandHumanNutritionatUniversityofFlorida.Thechosencandidatewillbesupportedbyfullscholarships.

Dr.Cheng’slabseekstounderstandthemolecularmechanismofmetabolicdiseases(obesityandtype2diabetes),withthegoalofdevelopingmechanism-basedstrategiesforearlydiagnoseandtreatmentofthediseases.Specifically,wearestudyingthecellularmechanismofadipocyteformationandexpansionduringobesitydevelopment,i.e.,howFoxO1andautophagyregulateadipogenesisandbeigingofwhiteadiposetissue(EijkelenboomandBurgering.NatureReviewsMolecularCellBiology;Altshuler-KeylinandKajimura.ScienceSignaling).Wecollaboratewithnano-medicineexpertstodevelopnano-devicestodeliverdrugstotreatobesityandmetabolicsyndrome.Anotherprojectongoinginthelabistostudytheepigeneticmechanismofdiabetesprogression,particularlyfocusingonDNAmethylation(Daveg?rdhCetal.MolecularMetabolism;ChengZ,etal.JournalofNutritionalBiochemistry).Thisisatranslationalresearchprogram,whereweusecellcultureforinvitromechanisticstudy,andrecruitobeseindividualstoexaminethepotentialofepigeneticmarkerstodiagnoseearly-stageprediabetesandassesstheeffectoflifestyleintervention.
